Medal of excellence for EMCDDA expert Laurent Laniel

We are delighted to announce that our colleague Laurent Laniel has been presented with the medal of excellence of the Maritime Analysis and Operations Centre-Narcotics (MAOC (N)). He received the award for his professionalism, expertise, dedication and collaboration in tracking drug trafficking in the Atlantic and Mediterranean maritime domain.

Laurent was presented with the medal on 18 October by the MAOC (N) Executive Director Sjoerd Top at a ceremony held in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. Medals were also awarded to distinguished national law enforcement and military officials as well as to staff members from Frontex and the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA).

Laurent joined the EMCDDA in 2008 and works as principal scientific analyst in the 'Risks to public safety and security' unit. He focuses on drug markets, crime and supply reduction, and has specialist knowledge on cannabis, cocaine and heroin, as well as captagon. Since the mid-1990s, he has carried out field studies on drug production and trafficking in Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe, and authored, or contributed to, many papers and reports for European and international bodies.
