Two bursaries covering the registration fee for the 2023 European Drugs Summer School (EDSS) are currently being offered through the EMCDDA’s partnership with the COPOLAD III programme. Professionals, academics or experts from Latin American and Caribbean countries (LAC) are encouraged to apply (1).
The EDSS, organised by the University Institute of Lisbon (ISCTE-IUL) and the EMCDDA, will be delivered face to face in Lisbon from 26 June–7 July 2023. With the overall theme of ‘Illicit drugs in Europe: demand, supply and public policies’, it will focus specifically on mental health and drug-related issues.
The EDSS will include lectures with experts and practitioners, virtual tours to field work projects and individual exercises (see full programme).
Completion of a written test at the end of the course is compulsory for those wishing to obtain credits. The course will be conducted in English; therefore, students should have a good written and spoken level of the language.

Please note that the EDSS takes place in Lisbon and is not a hybrid event. This bursary only covers the registration fee, meaning that travel and accommodation costs should be borne by the participant.
The EMCDDA became an official partner of COPOLAD III in July 2022. The programme promotes dialogue and bi-regional cooperation on drug policy between the European Union and Latin American and Caribbean countries.
Funded by the EU, the programme is led by the International Ibero-American Foundation for Public Policies and Administrations (FIIAPP), in consortium with the Italian-Latin American International Organization (IILA). Also collaborating in the programme is the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ).
