Prevention for the general population

Prevention for the general population

Typical interventions aimed at the general population are media campaigns and other interventions that target everyone (for example taxation and laws).

What works?

  • Mass-media campaigns can help to reduce drink-driving behaviours
  • Computer-based programmes have the potential to reduce recreational drug use in universal drug prevention programmes, at least in the medium term

What's unclear?

  • It is not clear if mass media campaigns can change behaviours related to illicit drug use and smoking

What doesn't work?

  • Mass-media campaigns as standalone interventions (without any other component) do not reduce tobacco and alcohol consumption
